Dr. Maria Luisa Sánchez Barrueco

Maria-Luisa Sánchez-Barrueco is Senior Lecturer at Deusto Law School (Bilbao, Spain). She holds a BA in Law, LL.M.Eur. (Université Catholique de Louvain), MA in European Politics and Administration (College of Europe), and a Ph.D. in Law (Summa Cum Laude) (University of Deusto). Her dissertation was on the institutional set-up and the interinstitutional relations of the European Court of Auditors.

Dr Sánchez-Barrueco was the first recipient of the Postgraduate Research Grants on European Public Finances jointly awarded by the European Court of Auditors and the European University Institute in 2007. She has been a visiting scholar in Latvia, Luxembourg, Italy, Ecuador, Mexico, United Kingdom and the United States.

Her current research foci encompass European Institutional Law, Financial Accountability in the European Union and public ethics in the EU multilevel governance. In the past, she has also published on EU visa policy, as well as CFSP and CSDP related matters.

Dr Sánchez-Barrueco was the leading coordinator of the UACES (University Association for Contemporary European Studies) 45th Annual Conference at the University of Deusto in Bilbao in September 2015.

She is also a founding member of the EUFINACCO research network on financial accountability in the European Union, which investigates the various accountability mechanisms/actors/processes in the field of budgetary management, both at the national and European level, with a view to expose gaps in the protection of the European financial interests (irregularities, fraud and corruption) that might reduce the efficient implementation of EU programmes and policies and thus produce a negative impact on the legitimacy of EU.

Her teaching activities include European Union Law, and International Organizations, at undergraduate level; and European Foreign Policy at graduate level.
